A bollard is a short vertical post, usually set in a line, used to control or direct traffic and keep vehicles out of spaces meant for people. Because we are a building contractor and not only a supplier, the core-drilling, footings, making good and paintwork are part of the same quote.

Buying bollards is the easy part. The work is in core-drilling through existing paving without cracking it, getting the footing deep enough to matter, spacing the line so it actually stops what it is meant to stop, and leaving the surface looking like nothing was ever cut.

We are an NHBRC-registered building contractor, not a supplier who subcontracts the site work — a registration you can check yourself. That means one quote, one crew, one guarantee — including the making good, the line marking and the paint.

Concrete Bollards

Mass does the work. Heavy enough to be effectively immovable once set, with no coating to maintain and nothing to corrode — the usual specification where a bollard has to stay put and stay unattended.

Tapered precast concrete bollard

Taper Concrete Bollard

The workhorse of parking areas and pedestrian edges. Tapered from 300mm at the base to 200mm at the top, so it reads lighter than a straight post while keeping its mass down low where a vehicle actually hits it.

Bloc 220 Concrete Bollard

A straight 220mm post with no taper — a cleaner, more architectural line for entrances, forecourts and paved areas where the bollards are part of the look. At 103kg it is a good deal lighter than the taper, which matters when access is tight and everything has to be carried in.

Stellenbosch Concrete Bollard

A square post with a gentle taper — 265mm at the base narrowing to 200mm at the top — normally supplied in the exposed aggregate finish shown. The square profile lines up cleanly against kerbs and paving edges, and an aggregate face hides scuffing far better than smooth off-shutter concrete does.

Bloc 250 Concrete Bollard

The heavier of the two Bloc posts — the same straight cylinder as the 220, but 250mm across and 137kg, so it takes a vehicle knock rather better. The rounded cap and the recessed groove under it throw a shadow line, which stops a run of them reading as lengths of pipe.

Barrier Concrete Bollard

The slim one at 180mm and 76kg — light enough to place by hand, and it can be cast with holes through the shaft to take a handrail, which turns a line of posts into a continuous barrier along a walkway or an embankment edge. Note that it sets 500mm into the ground rather than the 300mm the rest of the range needs, so the excavation is deeper.

A sphere rather than a post — for plaza edges, forecourts and pavement build-outs where a row of uprights would wall the space off. It stops a vehicle mounting the kerb while leaving sightlines and shopfronts completely open.

Ball 500 Concrete Bollard

The bigger ball at 500mm and 168kg — close to double the mass of the 400, which is what you want where vehicles lean on the line rather than just stray over it. Set in a run along a kerb or a corner it reads as a deliberate edge without blocking a single sightline.

Quartet Concrete Bollard

A near-square post with all four corners chamfered off — the detail the name refers to. Those cut corners take a knock far better than a sharp 90° arris, which is the first thing to chip on a square bollard, and they catch the light differently from the flat faces so a run of them has some depth to it.

The only unit in the range that needs no groundworks at all — 195kg of concrete standing on the surface, held down by nothing but its own mass. That makes it the answer where the paving cannot be broken or the layout has to change later, and it can be fitted to carry an advertising board.

Steel Bollards

Lighter, quicker to place, and straightforward to replace after a strike. Hot-dip galvanised for anything near the sea, and the only route to a removable or lockable unit.

At 14kg this is a different proposition to the concrete posts — one person carries it, and after a vehicle strike you cut it out and set a new one rather than craning a replacement in. The same 150mm post again, with three raised bands turned into the shaft below the cap. They give the bollard a shadow line that reads from a distance, and they are the obvious place to run reflective tape where a line has to be picked up by headlights.

A square-section post hinged to a bolt-down flat plate rather than set into a footing — the answer for parking decks and suspended slabs where there is no depth to core-drill or excavate into. Unlock the padlock at the hinge and the bollard tilts down to clear the bay; lock it upright again and it is back to a fixed barrier.

Materials & Finishes

Choosing for the Site, Not the Catalogue

Coastal exposure, vehicle impact and how often a unit needs to move all point to different materials. We specify from what the site does to the bollard, not from what happens to be in stock.

Precast Concrete

Mass does the work. Concrete bollards absorb low-speed vehicle impact without deforming, need no recoating, and will not corrode. Heavy to place, so access matters — but once set they are effectively permanent.

Hot-Dip Galvanised Steel

The default for anything within a few kilometres of the sea. The zinc layer is metallurgically bonded rather than painted on, so it survives knocks and salt air far better than a coating. First choice for the Atlantic Seaboard and coastal industrial sites.

Powder-Coated Steel

Where the bollard has to match a corporate colour or a building's palette. Best over a galvanised substrate — coating alone over bare steel is a false economy on a Cape Town site.

Enamelled Steel

Site-applied and easy to touch up, which suits high-traffic industrial areas where bollards get scuffed regularly and repainting is part of the maintenance cycle rather than a failure.

Installation

What the Installation Actually Covers

This is the part that separates a delivery from a finished job. Every item below is in the quote — you should not be arranging a separate contractor to patch the paving after your bollards arrive.

  • Core-drilling into existing slabs, paving and asphalt without cracking the surrounding surface
  • Excavated footings sized to the bollard and the impact it has to take — typically 400–600mm deep for cast-in steel
  • Setting out and spacing so the line actually works for the vehicles and pedestrians using it
  • Cast-in, dowelled or baseplate fixing chosen to suit the substrate rather than whatever is quickest
  • Making good the surface around each bollard — concrete, paving, asphalt or screed matched back in
  • Line marking and bay reinstatement where the installation cuts across existing markings
  • Painting and colour matching on site, including safety colours and reflective banding

Bollard Supply & Installation FAQs

What Cape Town facilities managers, trustees and business owners ask before ordering bollards — sizing, materials, installation and guarantees.

Do you supply bollards only, or do you install them as well?

Both. Most clients take the supply-and-install option because it puts one contractor in charge of the footing, the fixing, the surface reinstatement and the paint — but we will quote supply only if you have your own team for the site work.

What size bollard do I need?

It depends on what you are stopping. Delineating a walkway needs a light 60–76mm post; protecting a shopfront or switchgear from a reversing vehicle needs a 140–160mm concrete-filled steel bollard set into a proper footing. We advise on site rather than guessing from a catalogue.

Concrete or steel — which is better?

Concrete is heavier, needs no maintenance and suits high-impact vehicle areas. Galvanised steel is far lighter — 14kg against 100kg-plus — so it is quicker to place, easier to replace after a strike, and the only route to a removable unit. On coastal sites we push hard for hot-dip galvanising over any painted-only steel.

Can you install bollards into existing paving or asphalt?

Yes. We core-drill through the existing surface, set the bollard into a footing below, and make the surface good around it. That is exactly the part a supply-only vendor leaves to you.

Do you supply removable bollards for reserved parking bays?

Yes. Removable bollards come in two forms — one drops into a flush ground sleeve set into the surface, the other lifts off a bolt-down base plate. Both let you open the bay for deliveries or emergency access and lock it again afterwards, and both are common in complexes and office parks. Tell us which bays and how often they need to open, and we will spec the right one.

Do you work with body corporates and managing agents?

Regularly. We quote per phase so trustees can approve the spend, schedule around residents and tenants, and supply the documentation managing agents need for their records.

What guarantee do I get?

Our installation carries the same 12-month workmanship guarantee as the rest of our building work — if the fixing, footing or making good fails in that time we come back and fix it at no charge. The bollards themselves carry their manufacturer terms, and we tell you what those are before you order.

How much do bollards cost?

It depends on the type, quantity, substrate and how much making good is involved — a row of cast-in steel bollards through existing asphalt is a very different job to bolting units onto a clean slab. We quote after a site visit, and the number on the quote is the number you pay.
